Thanks to our long, sunny summer days we grow great grasses in this part of the world, and great grasses are the foundation of a great dairy community.
The majority of our local dairy farmers raise dairy cows, and they sell directly into Canada’s supply-managed dairy system. Their milk tends to be sold east of Thunder Bay, while we receive milk from farmers west of us. Fortunately, we do have some licensed processors of cow’s-milk dairy working with family farms to produce cheeses, fluid milk, yogurt and other cow’s milk products that are sold right here in the community.
There are also newer operations producing sheep’s-milk cheeses.
